On December 7, 1941, at 7:55 a.m., Lieutenant Colonel D R Fox and the eighty-seven men of the United States Marines Marine Detachment aboard the USS Arizona were killed in action in defense of Pearl Harbor. Born July 10, 1898, Fox died aboard the USS Arizona and had earlier earned the French Croix de Guerre, the Army Distinguished Service Cross, and the Navy Cross for heroism on October 4, 1918, making him the most combat decorated American aboard the ship that day. The dead included Marines aboard the USS Arizona as well as Marines killed on the USS Nevada, USS Oklahoma, USS Pennsylvania, USS California, USS Helena, and at the Marine Corps Air Station.
