Founded by Jacob Ruffin, Sr. and his wife Lula as a small roadside stand, Ruffin Brothers Grocery eventually expanded to include groceries and furniture. The store was run by their four children, Mary Lou, Emma, Samuel, and Jacob Jr. Jacob Ruffin, Jr. became the first African American elected to the Town Council and served for over 25 years.
