In 1978, bald eagles in Ohio were listed for protection under the state and federal Endangered Species Act. In 1979, only four successful nesting pairs remained in the state. By 1999, fifty nests were recorded, and by 2007, one hundred sixty-four nests were recorded, with one hundred sixteen of those nests hatching at least one chick. In 2020, seven hundred seven nests were documented in the state, and bald eagles were nesting in all but three of Ohio's counties. Bald eagles have been spotted along the Scioto River near the Columbus Zoo and in parks around Central Ohio, and the eagles housed at the Columbus Zoo came from rehabilitation facilities across the state because they can no longer survive in the wild.
