The Butler Log Cabin was built in 1860 by James Thomas and Margaret Ann (Maggie) Searcy Butler on a 240 acre homestead in the Jackson Camp area near Paden, Mississippi. Later moved by the Corps of Engineers from an area flooded by Bay Springs Lake, it is an excellent example of log construction technology, featuring hand hewn timbers, half dovetailing corner timbering, and pegged joinery. James Thomas and Margaret Ann Butler’s five children were born and raised in the cabin, which had two rooms and three side rooms. Ownership remained in the Butler family, passing to their fifth child, Alvin Butler, and his wife, Luna, and later to their son and daughter-in-law, Rex and Ruby Butler, and their daughter Ruby Caldwell, who owned it when it was purchased and disassembled in 1979.
