Duke Farms in Hillsborough, New Jersey, began in 1893 as James Buchanan Duke’s country estate, shaped to resemble the North Carolina landscape of his youth and expanded into a vast property of farmland, woodland, lakes, roads, and stone walls. After his death in 1925, Doris Duke ultimately secured the estate, restored it, and made it her main home, later adding Duke Gardens and opening them to the public in 1964. Following her death in 1993, the property was transformed by the Doris Duke Foundation into a center for environmental stewardship and public access, with habitat restoration supporting endangered species and diverse birdlife.
