Duke Gardens at Duke Farms in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey, became one of the nation’s most important indoor botanical garden complexes. Created by Doris Duke on her father James Buchanan Duke’s estate, the gardens opened to the public in 1964 and centered on a quadrangle of elaborate themed environments ranging from Italian, French, and English designs to landscapes inspired by China, Japan, Indo-Persian, tropical, desert, and colonial southern settings. Doris Duke personally designed nearly all of the gardens and continued refining them for decades. Closed in 2008 during Duke Farms’ reorganization, the dismantled collection was dispersed to public gardens, while new display gardens later reopened on the estate.
