The men and women of Nitro, WV who served in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War were honored by the citizens of their city. World War II service was recognized for the period 7 December 1941–31 December 1946, and the memorial named Harmon, Harvey L.; Hendel, Charles H.; Sibley, Robert L., Jr.; Smith, Maurlin R.; Staton, Robert M.; Thudium, Harry N.; and Walker, Daniel E. Korean War service was recognized for the period 27 June 1950–31 January 1955, and the memorial named Marshall, James E.; Merkett, Eugene; and Osborne, R. Arlan. Vietnam War service was recognized for the period 5 April 1964–7 May 1975, and the memorial named Crites, Richard R.; Dawson, Danny L.; Harrison, Randolph M.; Haverland, Mark J.; Hoffman, Charles D.; Moore, Stephen A.; Sublett, Garry L.; Taylor, James L.; Walters, William P.; and Estep, Earl B. James Craig Wears, 1948–1967, was also honored as having made the supreme sacrifice in Vietnam along with other friends and comrades to preserve freedom for others.
