Bloomery Forge Trip Hammer
Industry
The Bloomery Forge trip hammer was powered by an undershot water wheel twelve feet in diameter. Lifted by wipers attached to the water wheel shaft, the hammer beat slag and impurities from pig iron. After pounding the iron into blooms it was sent to the Anchony and Chaffery Forges for further refining. Together the anvil and trip hammer weigh 10,901 pounds.
