History

Pewangoing Quarry is a prehistoric flint quarry on the Lake Michigan shore north of Norwood, Michigan, where stone was obtained for making tools. Used from the Early Archaic through the Late Woodland periods, it reflects a long span of prehistoric activity in the region. Its importance rests on that sustained role as a source of tool stone within the broader archaeological landscape. The site received formal recognition in 1972 with its listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is also part of the Pi-wan-go-ning Prehistoric District.
