Base Jumping in Moab

Moab is a prime destination for BASE jumpers from around the world because its high density of sheer, easily accessible cliffs makes it an especially desirable landscape for the sport. Modern parachutes allow jumpers to steer their flight, and they choose landing areas that are generally clear of boulders, trees, and other hazards before jumping, with a planned flight path to reach them. Learning to BASE jump requires at least 200 skydives, which teach canopy control and basic parachute rigging, including packing, in an environment considered safer than BASE jumping, after which a person may enroll in a BASE first jump course offered by certain companies or instructors. Moab is considered an advanced BASE jumping site and is not recommended for beginners. What is generally considered jumpable on the low end ranges from 36.5 to 55 meters, or 120 to 180 feet, and modern equipment and special deployment and rigging techniques allow parachutes to open very quickly, so in Moab deployment may come about 0 to 2 seconds after leaving the cliff. A windsock helps jumpers assess wind conditions in the landing area, though winds can change after a jumper leaves the parking lot and may differ between the landing area and the exit point, affecting how a parachute flies, whether it is safe to fly, and which direction to land. It takes about 30 to 60 minutes for a jumper to hike from the parking lot to the exit point. BASE jumping in Moab began in the 1990s with a few rugged outdoor enthusiasts and grew from a fringe activity into a well-known extreme sport whose popularity in Moab also increased. BASE jumpers, though not the most frequent users of local Search and Rescue services, value that team and began a fundraiser in 2000 that has grown annually and expanded to support Grand County EMS, the Bureau of Land Management, and many local community programs.
