The Poison Spider petroglyphs are among the most unique rock art in this region. The Moab and Canyonlands area is one of the only places where rock art shows influences from Barrier Canyon, dating to about 2,500-6,000 years ago, as well as Ancestral Puebloan or Anasazi and Fremont styles, dating to about 850-2,500 years ago. The images here include Fremont anthropomorphs, quadrupeds, and abstract figures that show striking similarities to Anasazi rock art, suggesting that the Fremont and Anasazi may have shared more than symbolism. These petroglyphs are sacred to many Native American communities and are irreplaceable cultural resources; touching, defacing, tracing, carving on, or adding to the rock art damages what cannot be restored and is a criminal offense.
