Built in 1871 as the home of the Herman Luce family, the Luce Historic Cabin later housed many other families until the State of South Dakota became owner of the land in 1945 and created Lake Herman State Park. In 2004, Lake Herman State Park received funding from the South Dakota State Historical Society through a Deadwood Fund Grant to restore the structure. The grant program is funded by a portion of gambling revenue generated in Deadwood, South Dakota, and is distributed statewide by the State Historical Society as matching grants. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks provided the basis of the matching funds, with supplemental support from local organizations and individuals. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the cabin was restored according to required guidelines and stands as a reminder of the strength and dedication of the pioneers who first homesteaded Lake County, South Dakota.
