New Albany National Cemetery was one of the original seven national cemeteries established in 1862 by Congress. Five point four six acres were purchased from Dr. Charles Bowman in Dec. 1862 for the burial of Union and Confederate casualties. There are over 5,000 interments from seven conflicts: the Civil War, Indian Wars, Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, Korean and Vietnam.
