In Ganado on the Navajo Nation, Hubbell Trading Post grew after the Navajo returned from Bosque Redondo in 1868 and became the oldest continuously operated trading post on the Navajo Nation. Founded as a small post by William Leonard around 1874 and expanded after John Lorenzo Hubbell bought it in 1878, it served for decades as a store, post office, informal bank, and meeting ground where Navajo families traded wool, sheep, rugs, jewelry, baskets, and pottery for outside goods. Its preserved buildings, family history, and still-operating store reflect both Navajo economic recovery after the Long Walk and the complex exchanges that shaped the Southwest.
