Lewis Wetzel (1763-1808), a legendary frontiersman and Indian fighter, was buried at McCreary Cemetery. He roamed the nearby hills and valleys for many years after Martin Wetzel moved his family to the Wheeling Creed area in 1770, in what is now the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia. Indians feared Lewis so much that they named him "Death Wind" for his ability to load his flint lock muzzle loader while running at full speed, stopping and firing. His appearance also frightened them: he was six feet tall, with dark eyes and jet black hair that flowed down his back and reached his ankles.
