Hiddenwood National Wildlife Refuge is a 568-acre refuge in North Dakota that protects wildlife habitat through easements rather than federal ownership. The land remains in private hands while the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service works with local landowners to manage and conserve it. This approach grew from conservation efforts of the 1930s and 1940s, when falling waterfowl populations and Great Depression programs led landowners to sell easements allowing the government to regulate water levels and limit hunting. Hiddenwood is administered from Audubon National Wildlife Refuge, and public access is limited to views from nearby public roads.
