The Magdalena Fault forms the bench along the edge of the Magdalena Mountains, dividing the uplifted mountains from the plains below. To the west, the Magdalena Mountains are topped by South Baldy at 10,783 feet and Magdalena Peak at 8,152 feet. To the east, the La Jencia plain is bisected by Water Canyon three miles below.
