Maplewood Cemetery, also called Kingwood Cemetery, is located on East High Street in Kingwood, West Virginia. Kingwood Elementary School stood on the cemetery grounds from 1872 to 1976. Its sections include the Old Cemetery, Amos Edition, Brady edition, Godwin edition, Southeast Flynn Edition, Southwest Flynn Edition, and Southwest Flynn Edition Cremation. Among those buried there are Charles Byron, the first county clerk and owner of the property; Colonel Fairfax, the first sheriff of Preston County; James McGrew, owner of The McGrew House; and William Mercer Owens Dawson, a governor of West Virginia. The cemetery also contains American graves from World War II and remains a historical and important part of the community.
