Long Pond Ironworks State Park preserves the ruins of an early American ironworking community on the Wanaque River in Hewitt, West Milford, New Jersey. Founded in 1766 by Peter Hasenclever, the works were powered by water from Long Pond, now Greenwood Lake, and supported by about 500 ironworkers and families brought from Germany. For more than a century, the operation supplied iron to the Continental Army, American forces in the War of 1812, and the Union Army during the Civil War. Surviving furnaces, water wheels, industrial remains, and village traces reveal a landscape shaped by immigrant labor, military production, waterpower, and community life until ironmaking ended in 1882.
