Ringwood State Park spans four thousand four hundred forty-four acres in New Jersey’s Ramapo Mountains, uniting mountain scenery, historic estates, gardens, and recreation in one protected landscape. Its Skylands section features Skylands Manor, designed in the 1920s by John Russell Pope, and the New Jersey Botanical Garden, developed from grounds established by Francis Lynde Stetson. Ringwood Manor preserves the region’s ironmaking past, including Robert Erskine’s Revolutionary War work producing iron for the Hudson River Chain and military supplies, and his mapmaking service to George Washington, who visited several times. Shepherd Lake adds swimming, boating, fishing, trails, and traces of a former 1960s ski area.
