Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Ohio, emerged from a local effort in 1848 to create a community burial place and was designed by Adolph Strauch as a landscaped park-like cemetery in the rural cemetery tradition. Modeled on Mount Auburn Cemetery in Boston and Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, it combines graves, monuments, statues, paths, and plantings in a composed setting for remembrance. Listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, with five contributing buildings, it is also significant for the notable people buried there, linking it closely to Hamilton’s civic, political, military, and cultural history.
