Between 1953 and 1971, the airport in Wiley Ford hosted national sports car races attended by top racers Roger Penske, Bob Holbert, Don Yenko, Carroll Shelby, Briggs Cunningham, Donna Mae Mims, Mark Donohue, Dick Thompson, and others. Attendance at this 1.6 mile road course was estimated as high as 72,000. It was the site of the first race win in 1967 for the new Chevrolet Z28 Camaro.
