In Wilmette on Lake Michigan, the Baháʼí House of Worship serves North America as the second Baháʼí temple ever built and the oldest surviving one. Planned from 1903 and championed by Corinne Knight True with encouragement from ʻAbdu'l-Bahá, it took shape through decades of fundraising, design, and delayed construction before its dedication in 1953. Designed by Louis Bourgeois, the temple blends symbols and forms from multiple faiths to express the Baháʼí principle of religious unity. Its dome, intricate concrete cladding, and repeated use of nine make it an architectural landmark, while its later recognition and community roles have made it a prominent Illinois destination.
