Terrett Butte, or the Turret Buttes, is a striking landmark in south-central Montana east of the Powder River, known for a silhouette resembling a castle or gun turret. It entered the written record on September 12, 1865, during the Powder River Expedition, when Major Lyman G. Bennett described the surrounding country as high, rocky, and shaped like ruins and castles. The buttes appeared on maps by the 1880s and were probably named for a homesteading family. A nearby school linked the landmark to local ranching life from about 1915 into the 1940s, and it remains an important geographic and historical feature of the Powder River country.
