Slayton Arboretum is a 14-acre botanical garden beside Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan, developed from land long used by students and formally established after George A. and Mrs. Slayton donated it to the college in 1922. Under Professor Bertram A. Barber, early plantings and features such as a pond, field station, rock garden, waterfall, bridges, and amphitheater gave it a distinctive character that largely survived later neglect. Renewed restoration in the early 1990s and renovations completed by late 2013 helped preserve its mature trees, semi-natural landscape, and diverse collections. It remains a public garden, study site, and community gathering place, though a 1999 death there also forms part of its history.
