The A:shiwi A:wan Museum and Heritage Center in Zuni, New Mexico, preserves and presents Zuni history and lifeways as both a museum and an archive. Emerging from tribal planning in the 1960s and 1970s, it became a nonprofit in 1992 and grew from a single exhibit room into its current home in the former Hebadina Building, once a trading post. Its permanent exhibition, The Hawikku: Echoes From Our Past, follows Zuni creation, migrations, and the last 500 years of history, while photographs from the 19th through 21st centuries show continuity and change in Zuni life. Traditional waffle gardens and the annual Zuni Festival of Arts and Culture connect this history to living culture.
