Hawikuh Ruins, also called Hawikku, is an archaeological site on the Zuni Indian Reservation in western New Mexico and one of the largest Zuni pueblos at the time of the first Spanish entrada. Founded around 1400 AD, it became closely linked to the legend of the Seven Cities of Gold after Estevanico reached it in 1539 and was killed there, and Coronado’s expedition arrived the next year as the first Spanish explorers to visit and conquer a pueblo. A mission established there in 1628 symbolized colonial control, but repeated resistance, attacks, and the Great Pueblo Revolt led to Hawikuh’s permanent abandonment in 1680.
