Jacob Richard Stoker was a gallant Mexican War veteran who fought in principal battles. He came to California in ’49 and to Jackass Hill in ’50. He built a famous cabin there and was intimately associated with Mark Twain and the Gillis brothers. A member of Tuolumne Lodge No. 8, F. and A. M., he was just and fair, settled miners’ disputes, and helped his fellow men and community. He became famed as “Dick Baker” in Twain’s “Roughing It” and as the hero in “Jaybird and the Acorn,” “Burning Shame,” and other stories.
