James LeTort, an Indian trader, claimed ownership of 500 acres of this land in 1719 and lived in a cabin somewhere in this vicinity, where he operated a lucrative trading post with Peter Bezaillion and Moses Comb. Prior to the Revolutionary War, Christian Winiker, pronounced “Vinegar” in local dialects, established a ferry crossing between this point and the opposite shore of the Susquehanna River to transport people and goods, with Alexander Lowrey as his partner. The present-day Vinegar Ferry Road brought local traffic to the crossing. Christian operated the ferry until his death, after which his son, David Winiker, continued the business, but David’s death shortly after his father’s brought development of the crossing to an abrupt end. By tradition, local residents used the ferry up through the Civil War era, although historical documentation on the crossing remains very scant.
