The Haines Shoe House in Hellam Township, Pennsylvania, is a five-story novelty building shaped like a work boot, built in 1948 by shoe retailer Mahlon Haines as an advertisement for his stores. Designed around the boot’s form, it housed a living room in the toe, a kitchen in the heel, and bedrooms in the ankle. Haines used it as a vacation retreat for elderly couples and at times for newlywed contest winners rather than as his own home. After changing owners and uses following his death in 1962, it was restored beginning in 1987 and remains a well-known example of roadside architecture and Haines’s showmanship.
