Dr. Squire White was the first licensed physician in Chautauqua County, settling in Pomfret in 1809 after serving a brief stint as a preacher in the neighboring Town of Sheridan the year before. He quickly became an important part of the young community. In 1813, he married Sarah Barker, daughter of Hezeikiah Barker, and they had four children before her untimely death in 1823. He later married Lydia Cushing, daughter of Zattu Chshing, and they had three children. White was also active in local affairs, serving as Town Supervisor in 1838 and 1839. He bought 25 acres from his father-in-law Hezekiah Barker at the corner of what is now Main and White Street and built a home there that was demolished years after his death in 1857. His son Devillo then built a new home on the original site and lived there for the next 45 years. In 1919, White's granddaughter Isabelle White sold that home, which survives today as The White Inn Hotel and Restaurant. Despite its name, Dr. White never saw or lived in the White Inn.
