The Camden and Amboy Railroad reached Spotswood in 1832 as it was built from Bordentown to South Amboy. Based on British practice, stone sleepers were used as the foundation for the rails, with stone blocks supplied from quarries near Sing Sing prison in New York. Iron spikes were secured into holes drilled into the stone to hold the tracks, but spring thaw heaving led to the decision to use wooden ties instead, and the sleepers were gradually replaced. Spotswood’s role in the region’s growth can be traced to the rail line, which brought materials in, carried products out, and provided passenger service for travel to nearby stations and longer-distance destinations in nearby metropolitan areas.
