In the 1840's, the first Merry-Go-Round in the United States was built on this site. Franz Wiesenhoffer, a deaf-mute German immigrant employed here by wagon maker J. Kechele, spent his evenings carving life-like figures of horses, deer, and lions for its construction, and it was first erected in the Kechele yard. First operated by hand and later by horse power, it was hauled from town to town on a specially constructed wagon. After some months of travel, it was taken to Harbor Creek, Pennsylvania, where it was sold to a New York firm that is still active in the Merry-Go-Round business.
