This area saw its only Civil War battle when Col. John S. Scott, CSA, and his troops arrived at Irvine on July 30, 1863, planning to capture the 14th Ky. Cavalry. Scott held Irvine only a few hours before Col. W. P. Sanders, USA, and his force pursued him and captured some of his rear guard. Scott's troops crossed the river at Irvine but fought Sanders' men from the other side before Scott soon departed.
