Fremont Indian State Park and Museum in Clear Creek Canyon preserves the archaeological remains of the Fremont culture, whose people lived in north and central Utah and nearby parts of Colorado, Idaho, and Nevada from about 400 to 1300. Discovered during Interstate 70 construction, the site revealed an ancient village and thousands of artifacts, many now displayed in the museum. The Fremont are understood as agriculturalists whose lifeways developed from earlier local hunter-gatherer communities and were influenced by the Ancestral Puebloans, whose introduction of corn and pottery helped support year-round settlement. The park connects this history to the canyon landscape through exhibits, trails, and picnic areas.
