Scott County Home, about a mile south of Scottsburg, Indiana, began as the county’s poor farm, created to house and support people who were poor, indigent, or living with physical or mental disabilities. The site’s first county home dated to 1872, replacing an earlier home in Lexington, and the present brick building was erected in 1892. It continued serving vulnerable residents until 1973, then housed county offices until 1997. After the county transferred the property to Preservation Alliance, Inc., it became the Scott County Heritage Center and Museum in 2001. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, it preserves both its welfare history and local heritage.
