In 1955, the Watertown Goslings won the city's first State Baseball Championship. Led by Coach Thompson and playing home games at Washington Park, the team took pride in its pitching and defense. Block served as captain, and Bast and Rose were co-MVPs. The Goslings also won the Braveland Conference Championship for the second consecutive season. In tournament play, Crupi, Rose, and Sell each went 3 and 0, including Rose's no-hit game against Waterloo. In the semifinal, behind Sell's pitching and Bast's defense, Watertown beat Edgerton 2 to 1 when Theder singled home Mullen with the winning run. Crupi then won the final against Cuba City 11 to 1 to secure the WIAA State Championship, and fans lined Main Street as the team rode through Watertown on a fire engine.
