Cranberry Bog State Nature Preserve at Buckeye Lake protects a rare wetland formed from a glacial landscape that began changing about 18,000 years ago as the Wisconsinan Glacier retreated. Once part of the Big Swamp, the area evolved from glacial lake to peat-filled marsh and forested swamp, and later changed again when an 1826 dike built for the Ohio and Erie Canal helped create the island bog seen today. Covering about 21 acres, the bog is a National Natural Landmark known for abundant cranberries and unusual wetland plants. Fragile and shrinking, it remains a significant remnant of Ohio’s glacial past.
