Buckeye Lake State Park in Ohio encompasses 3,349 acres of shoreline, islands, and water across Fairfield, Licking, and Perry counties, with areas including Brooks Park, Fairfield Beach, Liebs Island, Mud Island, and North Shore. Now used for boating, fishing, swimming, picnicking, wildlife observation, and winter recreation, it grew from a much older landscape. Before engineering reshaped the area, it was a glacially formed natural lake and wetlands system known in the 1700s as the Great Swamp. Work on the Licking Summit Reservoir began in 1826 to supply the Ohio and Erie Canal and finished in 1830; renamed Buckeye Lake in 1894, it became a state park in 1949.
