The west side of 4th Street in the block northwest of the courthouse square included businesses such as a jewelry store, a cobbler, a tailor, and the Lincoln Pure Butter Company. The First National Bank, located to the right, moved into the Wolfe Building when it was completed in 1914. In 1934, the First National Bank acquired the assets of the Central Nebraska National Bank and moved into the Bunting Building to allow extensive remodeling of the Wolfe Building. In February 1945, a destructive fire engulfed the Wolfe Building and displaced seven businesses. After repairs in 1946, J.C. Penney's store moved into the building, which later served as the Knights of Columbus Hall.
