Gunnison Gorge Wilderness is a protected area in Colorado just northwest of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Established in 1999, it encompasses 17,784 acres and includes 14 miles of the Gunnison River within the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area. Its importance lies in preserving a largely undeveloped stretch of the Gunnison Gorge and connecting the river corridor with the rugged land alongside the Black Canyon. This designation provides lasting protection for the landscape while keeping it within the broader conservation area centered on the river.
