Patrick Bates of K Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Division was the last American soldier killed in combat during World War II. He was shot in the back of the ear on the right side by a Japanese sniper in Guam. He was buried in Punchbowl National Cemetery in Honolulu, Hawaii.
