Bell Labs emerged from the Bell System’s telephone research and was formally organized in 1925 to unify large-scale research and development under joint ownership by Western Electric and AT&T. From early New York facilities to its defining home in Murray Hill, with major New Jersey sites at Holmdel and Crawford Hill, it became one of the twentieth century’s most influential industrial research centers. Its work is credited with breakthroughs including the transistor, laser, photovoltaic cell, charge-coupled device, information theory, radio astronomy, Unix, and several programming languages. Honored with eleven Nobel Prizes and five Turing Awards, it later passed through AT&T, Lucent, Alcatel-Lucent, and Nokia.
