The two-story Leo Lesser Building was constructed in 1909 by Leo Lesser and has served many uses, including a clothing store, a ten-cent store, a hardware and furniture business, a doctor's office, an auto parts store, a restaurant, and in 1993 the center for the Mississippi Gaming Commission in Northern Mississippi. The adjoining alley was used for patio dining during the late 1990s and into 2002, and during World War II the upstairs served as apartments for returning soldiers and their families. Leo Lesser was one of Tunica's most colorful and questionable characters, a trusted banker who in April 1913 left Tunica with two million dollars of the bank's assets, leaving his family behind to face the disgrace. He returned to Tunica in 1924, was met at the train by some of the town's favored sons, taken to court and forgiven, and then honored with a party celebrating his return.
