Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona erected its 90-inch reflector in 1967 under the Board of Regents and university leadership, with William Wade as architect and Allison Steel Manufacturing Company as contractor. On 1996 Aril 28, the 90th anniversary of the birth of Bart J. Bok, fourth Director of the Steward Observatory from 1966 to 1970, the telescope was renamed in his honor. Bok’s enthusiastic leadership resulted in the construction and early operation of this facility, bringing Steward Observatory into the forefront of international ground-based astronomy.
