The Thayer brothers, Isaac, Israel, and Nelson, murdered Great Lakes seaman John Love in Israel's home because they were unable to repay the debt they owed him. They were tried in Buffalo on June 7, 1825, and a great crowd witnessed the only public hanging in Erie County.
