Built in 1885, the Mulholland Point Lighthouse guided small coasters and freighters through the narrow passage between Campobello and Lubec, a shorter route protected in foul weather, while steamships carrying freight and passengers bound in many cases for Campobello's resort hotels could pass through the narrows only at high tide. Its white octagonal tower stood 9.7 metres tall, post and timber-framed and covered with cedar shingles, topped by a 3.7 metre red iron lantern for a total height of 13.4 metres, and its 7th order refractive lens was visible 6.4 kilometres away. During an inspection trip along the Maine coast as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Franklin Roosevelt came to Campobello aboard the U.S.S. Flusser and, taking the helm, piloted the vessel through the narrow channel between Lubec and Campobello, earning the respect of Lt. William F. "Bull" Halsey, later Admiral Halsey, who wrote that Roosevelt knew his business. For many years Campobello could only be reached by boat, and later car ferries carried up to six vehicles across the narrows when weather and visibility allowed, but not at night. Construction of the international bridge between Lubec and Campobello began in January 1960, with Canada and the United States sharing the cost equally, and when the Roosevelt Memorial Bridge formally opened on August 13, 1962, travel to and from Campobello became possible in all weather and, except for a brief period that first winter, twenty-four hours a day. Navigation lights on the bridge made the lighthouse obsolete, and the Canadian Coast Guard decommissioned the light in 1963, sold it to Campobello resident Clifford Calder, and after Calder later sold it to the Look family of Washington County, Maine, Anthony, Lynn, Austin, Donald and Shirley Look donated it in 1984 to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park Commission.
