Roosevelt Campobello International Park is jointly administered, staffed, and funded by the peoples of Canada and the United States, a unique example of international cooperation established by treaty in 1964 and symbolizing the close relationship between the two countries. In 1967, when the Queen Mother Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth opened the Park Visitor Center, she said it was most fitting that the memory of so gallant and illustrious an American should be honored on the Canadian island he loved. In June 1933, after completing his first Hundred Days in office, Franklin D. Roosevelt and three of his sons sailed from Marion, Massachusetts, to Campobello aboard the schooner Amberjack II, where Eleanor Roosevelt and various dignitaries, including officers of the USS Indianapolis anchored off Welshpool in Canadian waters, met them for a shore picnic. The visit lasted three days and two nights. During the visit, Roosevelt said that the reception at Welsh Pool and Eastport was probably the finest example of friendship between nations, a permanent friendship between nations, that they could possibly have.
