Kendall-Frost Mission Bay Marsh Reserve is a twenty-acre University of California reserve on Mission Bay in San Diego that preserves some of the bay’s last remaining coastal salt marsh while serving teaching and research. Expanded by the adjacent Northern Wildlife Preserve to about forty acres of wetland habitat, it began with a 1952 donation of upper marsh parcels and in 1965 became one of the first seven sites in the University of California’s reserve system. Its marshes, mudflats, tidal channels, salt flats, and eelgrass beds support diverse plants, fishes, and birds, including the rare light-footed clapper rail, while restoration work helps improve habitat for native species.
