SeaWorld San Diego opened in 1964 in Mission Bay Park as the first SeaWorld, after its UCLA-trained founders abandoned plans for an underwater restaurant and created a marine-life park instead. Beginning with 22 acres, a small collection of dolphins and sea lions, and six attractions, it quickly drew large crowds and became the model for later SeaWorld parks. Over time it added landmarks such as the Bayside Skyride and Skytower, newer roller coasters, aquariums, and touch pools. Alongside entertainment, it has remained a public aquarium, marine mammal park, rehabilitation center, and research-connected institution known especially for its long association with orcas.
